COFFEE AND ME – Scent of my youth and more
COFFEE AND ME – Scent of my youth and more
In the podcast Have A Sip Ep98 of Vietcetera. The author Marc Levy said:
Coffee – “It’s the smell of my childhood”
“You re waiting a moment where you’re going to be allowed to do some adult stuff. Coffee was the first forbidden thing.”
This comment made me think about one of my present hobbies – drinking coffee which motivated me to write this blog.
Coffee flavor evaluation, I think, is one of the most difficult sensory work all over the world. Like becoming a perfumer, you have to learn and remember countless kinds of coffee scents.
I don’t remember exactly when I’m really into this kind of drink. I rarely drank coffee when I was in high school because my parents did not allow me to do this. And I just thought that enjoying this liquor is an adult stuff.
But when I knew drinking “Cà phê sữa đá” and knew how to make it by myself, I did love this kind of beverage for its taste and smell. Started from drinking it for making me feel awake and focused well on studying to enjoying it as a pre-work dose of every daily life. And now, I could say that I’m actually a coffeeholic ^_^
I bought a book called “ Sensory – Chạm cà phê từ mọi giác quan” (Touching coffee from all senses) attached with a dictionary of 100 coffee scents. I was literally surprised by the complication of evaluating the coffee smell and was more intensively interested in the fragrance and flavor world.
Depending on the roast of the coffee, it can range widely from light to burnt. Actually, I usually sniff the cup of coffee before sipping it. I usually feel the smell of dark chocolate, the pleasant greasy taste of peanut, hazelnut or other types of nuts, or the fatty and milky touch of cheese in the surface of the coffee cup.
My favorite coffee now
TMI time ^^
Two of my favorite kinds of coffee are Cloud Coffee 50% sugar from Cheese Coffee and Salted Cheese with Macchiato from Okee Tea.
I’m not really into eating something too fatty or sugary, but with this type of drink, especially ones with cheese and fresh milk, it engages me to drink over and over again.
Vietnamese coffee culture
In Vietnam, drinking coffee is one of the common social pastime, if you travel in any corner of Vietnam, you will see lots of coffee shops, from the open-air ones to the house with beautiful interior decors from different styles.
For the Vietnamese, coffee is not just a drink, it’s actually a way of life.
It is not surprised that coffee in Vietnam is the most popular beverages as Vietnam is the world’s second-largest coffee exporter behind Brazil.
